THOUGHTS FOR REFLECTION
Living “united in heart”—united in spirit and ideals—as St. Paul speaks of in his reading to the Philippians, should be the goal of all people in our parish as well. The overall theme for this weekend is responsibility. Christ is the model and the Gospel teaches us that Jesus was persistent in refuting the legalism of his time. God’s Word, as we read today, helps us to avoid formalism as a cover-up for genuine love and commitment. We should be open to the real Christian values. How do you see your family or your parish family “united in heart”?
Weekly Offertory
Weekend of September 17th/18th
Sunday Offertory: $12,340.00
Parish Improvement Fund: $1,860.00
Total: $14,200.00
THE MEN OF ST. JOSEPH
The Men of St. Joseph will hold their first meeting of the fall season on Thursday evening, September 29th, in the Parish Center at 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Thomas Hicks will be our guest speaker and will address one of the great tragedies for the Catholic Church: The split between Eastern and Western Churches.
What were the causes of this schism? What continues to maintain it? Who is right or wrong? Is there hope for reconciliation? Who are the “Uniates”? What are the major disagreements between the Churches? What is the main cause of the continued separation?
Learn about some of the failed attempts to secure reunion and come to know some of the distinguishing characteristics of Eastern Orthodoxy.
All men of the parish are cordially invited to attend. Coffee and donuts will be served.
THE WOMEN OF SAINT LAWRENCE
A “Meet and Greet Tea” will take place on Thursday, October 6th, at 7:00 pm when we will meet and greet Father Mirek. Please remember your teacup, a can of food for Spooner House, and children’s books for a school district in Texas.
Our Communion breakfast will be held on Sunday, November 6th, after the 9:30 am Mass at the Brownson Country Club. Our guest speaker Diane Crehan, an author and award winning storyteller, will speak on the topic “The Women who Encountered Jesus.” Tickets are $25 (cash only), and will be available at the October meeting and by calling Millie at 203-929-0527, Ceil at 203-929-2049, or Jo at 203 261-8955.
WORD OF LIFE
Everything in our days – our work, our sufferings, our prayer, our ministries – everything we do and experience is meant to be offered to God as a spiritual sacrifice. All of our work for the unborn child, the poor and the disabled; all of our work for immigration justice and the dignity of marriage and the family: All of it should be offered for the praise and glory of God’s name and for the salvation of our brothers and sisters. ~ Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Denver, Address “Glorify God by Your Life: Evangelization and the Renewal of the Liturgy,” June 24, 2010.

HOLY FAMILY RETREAT CENTER
The Courage to Hope: Finding God in All Things is the theme for the 2011-2012 retreat season at Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford. Sometimes it’s easy to experience God’s presence in the world; feelings of peace remind us we’re not alone. But other times we may feel God is absent, and we may lose our grounding in the faith that has sustained us. Becoming agents of hope in a world of distraction, pessimism and busyness takes great courage. Together, we will explore how God’s presence, hidden in every moment of life, equips us to be courageous and hopeful for ourselves and others.
Women’s Retreat: September 30 – October 2
“The Courage to Hope”
A retreat is a great opportunity to be with other women and to rediscover the presence of God in your life. Retreat begins on Friday evening with a buffet dinner from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and ends on Sunday around noon.
Retreat Offering: $250.00

SISTERS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Sale of hand-made goods:
After Masses ~ Weekend of October 8th/9th
Like any contemplative community of nuns, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd are consecrated exclusively and primarily to God. Prayer was, is, and always will be the relevant and valuable way of expressing their deep concern for other people and for the profound sufferings of our world. Unlike apostolic sisters, however, they are not employed outside the monastery but are self-supporting through the distribution of altar breads and by the fine handcrafted items that they make through the year such as Advent wreaths, candles (baptismal, anniversaries, etc.), soaps, rosaries and chaplets, angels, frames, holiday décor, quilts, etc. Their work is done in conscious solidarity with all those who have to toil hard to earn their living. Earnings are shared with all others in need, particularly women and children who have been set aside by society.
Just as the ancient monks of the desert brought the work of their hands to sell in the market place, the Sisters bring their goods as well – but to parishes willing to welcome them. When they go to parishes, the Sisters also bring assorted home-baked goods: squares, Irish scones, delicacies, muffins, etc.
